The details decide how long a gate lasts, so we sweat them: hinges sized for the weight of the leaf instead of whatever was on the old one, a cane bolt to pin the fixed leaf, latches that catch every time, and a hard look at both gate posts — if one is loose, we say so and re-set it in concrete, because new leaves on a failing post is money wasted.
